Oregon Chiro Motorcycle Ride
The Oregon Chiropractic Motorcyclists will take a 3 day ride through Eastern Oregon September 19, 20, 21.
This is the first official announcement of the third annual event that takes place around Labor Day weekend.
Last year, the club rode down the Oregon coastline into Mendicino County, California. Two years ago the club rode into Penticton, Canada. Each evening the riders discuss motorcycling and chiropractic.

ALERT OF THE WEEK: HOMEOPATHY
Consumer Reports journalist, Doug Podolsky, took a stab at homeopathy in the recent issue of Consumer Reports. Despite over 200 years of successful use for a variety of ailments, homeopathy is quackery, according to Podolsky who writes, "Check whether over-the-counter products are labeled homeopathic. If they are, we think you should put them back on the shelf." Podolsky's Consumer Reports piece references a 2005 study indicating homeopathy is ineffective, but he fails to mention the study has since been debunked. Unfortunately, due to the prestige of Consumer Reports, the article has already gone viral, as marketing firms and pharmaceutical companies spread it far and wide in an attempt to snuff competition from the natural health world.

Medicare Update
DIRECT FROM MEDICARE
Industry-Wide Enforcement of the National Provider Identifier (NPI) Compliance Date
On and after May 23, 2008, providers MUST begin using only their NPI (National Provider Identifier) on all HIPAA electronic transactions and paper claims submitted. All claims submitted after this deadline that have both NPI numbers and Legacy numbers or Legacy numbers only will be rejected. CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) is now requesting that providers begin to submit test claims without legacy/PIN numbers as currently used to begin to test claims and processing systems with NPI numbers only. After providers have first submitted claims containing both NPI number(s) and legacy identifiers and those claims have been processed correctly, Medicare urges you to next send a small batch of claims with only the NPI in the primary provider fields. Submission of incorrect claims will affect cash flow.
Instructions for test submission include:
Step 1
Bill with the Medicare legacy ID number and NPI. Once claims are successfully processed, move to Step 2.
Step 2
Bill with the NPI only. Start with a small batch of claims. When the results are positive, begin sending a greater volume and move to Step 3.
Step 3
Test the NPI only on other Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) transactions. Providers should begin testing the use of the NPI on these transactions in small quantities prior to May 23 to ensure a smooth transition.
As outlined in the Federal Regulation, The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), covered providers must also share their NPI with other providers, health plans, clearinghouses, and any entity that may need it for billing purposes. The NPI website is as follows: https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov.

ODOC statement on Public Health
Public health issues are paramount to the health and welfare of Oregon citizens and the nation at large. Many health problems stem from violating rational public health measures. For Oregon Doctors of Chiropractic, public health agendas relate to the health and quality of food, water, land, and air, and human health decline is directly related to the compromise of these four essential ingredients. Because of education, training, and clinical experience, chiropractors are prime agents in advising, assisting, and holding accountable the health and safety of public health matters in Oregon. Oregon Doctors of Chiropractic continues to network with associations and organizations that share similar tenants to promote positive public health measures for the good of the health of Oregon citizens.
